Testing Against Your Vision To Overcome Self-Doubt

When you are confused as to whether the track you are on-professionally or personally- is the one you are supposed to follow, what yardstick would you use to measure its veracity? This is a question that bothers us from time to time.

This is especially important in the modern world when we are time-starved and the necessary self-reflection needed to find a satisfactory answer seems more like a luxury than anything.

Your vision as a yardstick to judge your current trajectory

What makes the problem worse when such self-doubts haunt us is that it could make us feel trapped in ourselves, and the surviving the subsequent isolation could be a daunting task.

It’s natural in these circumstances to think of ourselves in less than flattering light. Criticisms against ourselves for the way we handled a past event and viewing ourselves as so shallow that we don’t have a broad enough vision for the future to help us move on are common accompaniments in such phases. Accompaniments we would rather lose like they are a ghost haunting your mind than spend one more moment in their presence.

Self_Doubt

When self-doubt assails you in life’s journey, test it against your vision

But the curious fact is that the questions that haunt us during moments of self-doubt could themselves offer the hope we are looking for. Especially important is the question of having a vision towards which we could move, and that would help us come out of the fix we find ourselves in.

For the true personal vision- one that’s born within you and not imposed from the outside- could be the measure against which you could judge your current trajectory. It’s a litmus test that helps you see if you are doing what you should be doing, which paves the way to a course-correction if needed.

Slicing through your influences to see yourself

Sometimes, the hectic pace of life could carry you like the rapids, and with the swirl of emotions and thoughts that accompany this super-fast motion(otherwise known as “running around like a headless chicken”) it could be hard to even know if you are doing what your soul yearns or not. In other words, you lose track of your vision.

The tricky fact about the mind is that it could be too fast for your consciousness to fathom the pathways by which it arrives at decisions and conclusions- at times, to your own detriment. So, you would need to slow down, engage in some self-reflection and map the various influences that defined the person that you are at this moment. These influences could be both external and internal, and play a decisive role in how you approach crisis situations.

Getting a broader view of these influences would help you see where your true strength lies in, and which are the weaker emotions and thought flows that are detrimental to your growth.

Even more important, it gives a clearer view of your inner self- your aspirations and values- which gives a comparison point against which you could judge your present actions and your decision-making process.

Emerson’s idea of the self and finding your vision

Ralph Waldo Emerson, the celebrated American writer and philosopher who championed the transcendentalist movement had this to say about being yourself: “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”

This sentiment Emerson expresses is more than just a sentiment: it’s an insight of profound value, one which is intrinsically linked with the idea of True Personal Vision.

For the personal vision is to be found in your own self- your true being, and not anywhere else in the whole universe. This is an ode to how unique you are as an individual, and also how important it is to discover the personal vision so that you could realize it in the real world.

Temenos Vision Lab or TVL is a unique session developed by Temenos+Agility which helps change agents realize their True Personal Vision. Based on 25 years of business consultancy experience, TVL is a platform where change agents across the world have found personal transformation via realizing their vision, guided by some of the best coaches in the business.
