The treasure & guarding dragon as symbols of psyche- on finding what’s valuable

When you think about a dragon, the first thing that comes to mind is perhaps the fiery breath. Swooping over landscapes teeming with people- could be soldiers or laymen- it breathes down fire, destroying everything in its way.

There could be multiple reasons for this trail of destruction that the dragon leaves in its wake.

At the heart of the self is a treasure invaluable

The idea of guarding treasure in popular imagination

One of the most common causes as depicted in popular culture is also the simplest- it’s just that the dragon is a beast that strives for dominance over land. And if humans breach into their territory, why, of course, they are going to breathe fire down your back.

Another reason for the dragon’s literally fiery behavior could be that they are employed in the service of a king or some other individual in power to bring down destruction on an enemy. Though dragons are generally depicted as notoriously hard to tame, storytellers come up with all manners of plot twists that render them loyal servants- or friends- to humans, making them not just an ally in the wars that humans wage, but also weapons from time to time.

But one of the more intriguing reasons for a dragon behaving with animosity towards humans is because the creature has been put in charge of guarding treasure. The question of who put the dragon in command of the treasure is  one that’s largely irrelevant to this blog post. Perhaps, it was because of a curse that the dragon is fated to remain at one place forever, guarding one particular treasure, ensuring it doesn’t fall into unworthy hands.

True Personal Vision- the treasure that lies buried in your mind

Fafnir is one such dragon who guards a treasure. Found in stories of Norse mythology, the beast is armored with scaly skin and the sharp edge of whose teeth inflicts fear on any onlooker when it parts its jaws.

With his formidable bulk and fire breathing ability, Fafnir is certainly a worthy sentry to guard a treasure. But what attracted many a brave warrior to attempt a fight with him was a specific gift which only Fafnir the Dragon could give them- anyone who ate the dragon’s heart would be able to understand the thoughts of other people.

In all the world, perhaps there’s nothing more impenetrable than the human mind. Not necessarily because one is trying to hide something from others, but because the fundamental reasoning behind many of the human thoughts remain muddled even to the one who harbors such thoughts. So, when someone is not clearly able to read everything on one’s mind, what could be said of others.

This sort of ‘unreadability of one’s own mind’ is getting increasingly common in the twenty first century. The reason for this is that this is the age of information saturation. Thanks to the ubiquity of the internet- and a global cultural affinity for smartphones- we muck up a lot of information- be it through news channels or social media platforms- to such a degree that many significant aspects of our mind get buried under that load of largely irrelevant information.

Put another way, because of the consistent state of distraction in which your mind exists faced with this unceasing flow of information, you tend to lose sight of some important things.

One of the most significant of these is your True Personal Vision.
