I originally wrote this post for the Urban Campfire Blog on August 7, 2013. As I prepare for a new lab session for Summer 2014, the description still rings true. Take care and enjoy. Also be sure to check out my Labs page to learn more.
I believe in the power of a story as a path to transformation. In order to fully realize the power of a story, you must interact with it. This interaction can take many forms, but basically has two parts: story telling and story listening. I find that when we are in the act of telling a story or in the act of listening to that story, we experience a shift in context that profoundly changes us.
I help women tell their stories, and these stories spark transformation. During my Labs, I have seen women experience a heightened sense of self-awareness through a process of deep introspection, reflection, and authentic connections with other the women in their group. By sharing their stories, and providing thoughtful insight by listening without judgement, they are able to recognize the themes and behaviors that have influenced and guided them throughout their lives. This helps them gain clarity and a renewed personal vision.
Every story starts in the past, brings us to the present, and, most importantly, propels us into the future. Every woman has a story to share and a voice that deserves to be heard. Every woman can experience transformation.
I know because I experienced this transformation myself. It happened when I decided to video record the story of my past influences. And, it happened in the moment. Throughout the telling of my story, the videographer and his partner experienced the joy and pain of my life along with me, crying and laughing, feeling exposed and vulnerable. At the end, they thanked me for allowing them to be part of this special moment. They were transformed.
